Laura Shechter
Laura Shechter is a contemporary realist painter, focusing on cityscapes and still lifes. She describes her practice as painting “a moment of light.” She achieves this through the use of rich color and a careful study of patterns and spatial relationships. She balances western and eastern aesthetics. Her influences include Northern Renaissance Art, Indian miniatures, and the feminist art movement.
Shechter received her BA in Fine Art from Brooklyn College, where she studied aesthetics under Ad Reinhardt. Her paintings have been exhibited throughout the United States. In 2013, she received a Puffin Foundation Grant, which seeks projects that enrich and inform the public on important subjects such as the environment, social justice, civil rights and other contemporary issues facing the country and the planet. Shechter is a member of the National Academy of Art.
