Artworks by Celie Gruber

Join us Friday, November 11, 6 - 8 PM, for an opening reception with the artist.
The Yard Gowanus, 157 13th Street (near 3rd Ave), Brooklyn, NY

Celie Gruber rejects the standard format of painting in favor of an experimental and unstable process that strips pigment from binder, form from canvas, tradition from medium. Poured and peeled paint hangs from thumbtacks and lies on the floor, engaged in a continuous transformation by oxidation and gravity. Gruber fuses painterly and sculptural approaches, and in doing so, creates a time-based experience for both artist and viewer.

Gowanus Open Studio Weekend & Artist Talk

Join us at The Yard Gowanus for Open Studio Weekend with M. Zassenhaus

Visit us this weekend to view the recently opened exhibition--
Solo Works by M. Zassenhaus.

Zassenhaus will host an art talk (with a splash of wine) on Saturday, October 16, at 3 PM.
We will learn about her process for creating works, in particular Black Ocean Works, which are co-created in the ocean itself. Zassenhaus' studio borders the ocean in the Rockaways so she will bring a bit of summer back to us as she builds each work with waves and sand.

"As an artist, my mediums are water, light, and time. I collaborate with my environment and consider the work a record of a sort of performance" says M. ZASSENHAUS.

Exhibition Location:
The Yard Gowanus
157 13th Street, Brooklyn
(between 3rd and 4th Avenues)

Hours this weekend:

Seduced by Steel, Glass & Concrete: Sharon Florin and Allan Gorman

  • The Yard: City Hall Park (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Opening Reception: Thursday, May 17, 2018, 6 - 8 PM

Through shared themes of the industrial, mechanical and architectural, Florin and Gorman explore the seduction of the city by rendering unmistakeable depictions of objects and buildings and distorting and decontextualizing them through seemingly naturalistic means such as reflection, shadow and forced perspective. While implementing a realistic style, each artist fragments the subject to a point verging on abstraction.

Tomo Mori’s work explores her experiences and challenges as a woman and as an immigrant. With feelings of voiceless imperfection she sorts through broken pieces of canvas to create transformative works of art with detailed craftsmanship. She utilizes the imperfection of broken shapes to create mosaic-like collage works that contain a liveliness of movement all their own.

Taking Heart in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction at Equity Gallery

Taking Heart in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction at Equity Gallery

Taking Heart is a joint exhibition by painter Jason Bryant and photographer Charles Cohen.

In this collaborative show, Bryant presents paintings of Cohen’s photographs of the iterations of four advertisements as they appeared throughout the New York City subway system. Cohen has created photographic copies of copies and Bryant has created photo-realistic, original paintings of Cohen’s copies. The process itself asks the often ignored question, what is an original?

While Cohen and Bryant direct us to Walter Benjamin’s landmark essay, Art in The Age of Mechanical Reproduction, as the conceptual basis, they consider it an entry point to diverse cultural insights into socio economics, gender, celebrity, humor and violence.
